How to Have a Pressure-Free Conversation About a Pregnancy Decision

Your go-to destination for all things pregnancy-related, offering helpful articles, tips, and real-life stories

You sit staring at a positive pregnancy test. You didn’t intend to be pregnant, but here you are. After the initial shock, you wonder what you should do. Who can you tell? What will your partner say?

You know if you tell six people, you’ll get six different answers. You need a safe, non-judgmental place where you can talk freely when facing an unexpected pregnancy.

NorthStar Women’s Center offers a confidential place to confirm your pregnancy, discuss your options, and have a pressure-free conversation. All of our services are free, so schedule an appointment to get some answers.

Have You Confirmed You’re Actually Pregnant?

After getting a positive result on a pregnancy test, it may seem strange to ask if you’ve confirmed that you’re pregnant. Research suggests that the number of miscarriages could be as high as 30% of all pregnancies.

Most miscarriages occur in the first 12 weeks. Since it takes a woman’s body time to return to pre-pregnancy hormone levels, it’s possible to get a positive pregnancy test but no longer be pregnant.

How Can You Confirm Your Pregnancy?

The team at NorthStar offers several no-cost services to protect your health and confirm your pregnancy. Your first step is to receive lab-quality pregnancy testing administered by a medical professional at our center.

If your test is positive, we may also offer STI testing. We provide testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea at no cost. If you’re sexually active, STI testing is essential to protect your sexual health.

Finally, we offer a free and confidential limited ultrasound to provide the answers you need. If an ultrasound detects a fetal heartbeat, you can be confident that you are pregnant. An ultrasound can also determine the number of weeks and days you’ve been pregnant and ensure the pregnancy is located correctly.

Would You Like to Discuss Your Options?

It can be hard to consider options when you’re surprised by an unexpected pregnancy. You actually have three: have an abortion, place your child for adoption, or consider parenting.

Although NorthStar Women’s Center does not perform or refer for abortion, we’re not afraid to talk about it. We’ll give you the facts about procedures, side effects, and possible complications.

By knowing how far along your pregnancy is through an ultrasound, you’ll know what abortion procedure you qualify for.

Additionally, NorthStar isn’t a licensed child-placing agency, but we’re happy to provide information and referrals to reputable adoption providers. Adoption today offers an expectant woman many options, like choosing the adoptive parents and determining the relationship she would like to have with her child moving forward.

Even if you feel parenting is out of the question, we’ll provide a list of services we provide, as well as community services available to you. When you have help from those who believe in you and your community, parenting is definitely possible.
