Your Support Systems and Your Voice

We all need support systems in our lives, but when trying to work through an unplanned pregnancy, it can be a little more complicated.

While many friends and family want what’s best for you, their goals could be different than yours. Remember that your voice matters most during this time.

Talking with Your Partner

Your partner is likely your most influential support system. Breaking the news to him can feel impossible, but it’s best to share for the future of your relationship.

Many partners may say what you decide is up to you, even when they DO have feelings about it. It’s vital to invite your partner to talk about your options with you, even if you will make the decision on your own.

On the other hand, your partner may be very opinionated, even to the point of being pushy. Remember to resist pressure and only make a decision when you feel at peace. Your mental health depends on it.

Talking with Your Parents and Family

Parents’ reactions vary depending on their relationship with you and their personal views.

However, when you break the news, remind them that your pregnancy is your decision, but you would love their support. Their support can take the form of encouraging you, discussing options, or helping you find resources and assistance.

Talking with Your Friends

Your friends are the least invested in your pregnancy because they are not related to you.

However, friends can sometimes give you the most unbiased support for this reason. If you have close friends, share the news and see how they react. They may offer to help you during your pregnancy, and they can be a great sounding board as you process everything.

Protect Your Safety

If you ever feel unsafe during conversations with your partner, family, or anyone, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline. You can also call 800.799.SAFE (7233) for assistance.
